What 500 pieces is like
Sorting matters now. The pieces are scattered in a ring around the board and you will want to zoom in to work on one area, then zoom out (the fit button shows everything) to find what is missing. Groups of joined pieces move as one, so building small islands in the scatter area and dragging them onto the board later is a good strategy.
Pictures with large uniform areas – skies, water, space – slow this size down a lot. Landscapes with a horizon, paintings and city scenes are the comfortable choices.
How long it takes
Typical times with the classic shape and rotation off, for a picture with a reasonable amount of detail:

Rotation adds around half again. The twisted shape adds more; square can double the time. Uniform pictures (sky, water, patterns) are slower than busy ones.
Which piece shape to pick
Stick with classic unless you specifically want a hard puzzle. Twisted at 500 pieces is a long evening; square is for people who enjoy suffering. Rotation on top of classic is a fair middle ground if the group is experienced.
- Classic (Normal) – Traditional knobs and holes. Every piece has its own silhouette, so the shape helps you.
- Twisted (Hard) – Wobbly, uneven cuts and knobs of random size. Pieces look alike and edges do not line up neatly.
- Square (Brutal) – Straight cuts, no knobs at all. Only the picture tells you where a piece goes.
Tips
- Build islands: join any two pieces you see fit, wherever they are, and merge islands later.
- The board locks pieces once they are correctly placed on it, so use the board as your "done" pile.
- Take a break. The room stays open for 12 hours after the last player leaves.

Can we finish 500 pieces in one evening?
Two people comfortably can, in about an hour to an hour and a half with the classic shape. Add rotation or the twisted shape and it becomes a two-evening puzzle.
Will 500 pieces work on a tablet?
Yes. Pinch to zoom and drag pieces with one finger. On a phone it is playable but fiddly; 100–300 pieces is a better phone size.
